3 Hikes from Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

If you're staying at the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, you’re already in one of the most breathtaking alpine settings in the world. But did you know there are three spectacular lakes nearby that offer unforgettable hiking experiences?

Let’s take a look at Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Emerald Lake — each with its own charm and level of adventure.

We’ll start right at your doorstep — Lake Louise. The Lakeshore Trail is an easy, flat 4-kilometre round trip that hugs the shoreline with stunning glacier views the whole way. Perfect for all ages and fitness levels, this walk is ideal if you want to take in the beauty without breaking a sweat.

Next up, Moraine Lake — just 20 minutes away. The Rockpile Trail is short and sweet at only 300 metres, but it delivers that postcard-perfect view of the Ten Peaks. If you’re up for a little more challenge, the Consolation Lakes Trail is a moderate 6-kilometre return hike through forest and over boulders, rewarding you with peaceful alpine lake views away from the crowds. Both of these lakes are in Banff National Park - did you know this was Canada’s first national park, founded in 1885!

And finally, head across the border into British Columbia to visit Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park. The Emerald Lake Loop is a gentle 5.2-kilometre trail with minimal elevation gain. It’s a serene walk through forest and wetlands with the emerald-green lake always in view — perfect for photography lovers.

Three lakes, three unforgettable trails — all within an easy drive of Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Whether you're looking for a peaceful walk or a moderate adventure, there's something here for everyone.

When we visited we took a planned activity in a small group on a bus to Emerald Lake and also booked the shuttle bus to Moraine Lake right with the hotel concierge. Early June is a good time of year to visit, before the very busy, at times crowded, main tourist season from late June through early September.
